Epidemic of Loneliness

What is the Epidemic of Loneliness?

Loneliness is becoming one of the most serious public health crises of our time – and young people are especially vulnerable.

Countless studies show that children today spend more time in the virtual world than engaging in real-world relationships with their families, friends, and peers. Despite promises of connection, the digitalization of childhood is leaving children feeling more isolated and alone than ever before.

This growing social disconnection has profound consequences. Loneliness is linked to higher rates of depression and anxiety, increased risk of cardiovascular disease and dementia, and a greater likelihood of premature death. Its impact on mortality rivals that of smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day, exceeding even the risks associated with obesity and physical inactivity.

Addressing the crisis of loneliness and isolation is one of our generation’s greatest challenges. By building more connected lives and more connected communities, we can strengthen the foundation of our individual and collective well-being
